Application
Sampling and sample preparation for quality tests is crucial in evaluation of cereal quality.
The automatic sampler KA-RO 2000 is used in automatic sampling of cereal grains, rape, maize etc. from any spot and depths with delivery of the sample to a laboratory located even 50 running meters away from the sampler installation point. Based on results of laboratory tests of the sample, the grain quality is assessed. The sample is highly representative owing to automatic sampling using a pneumatic system from the top layer to the bottom, and the program of sample collection is performed independently of personnel and vehicle height. The samples collected are transported in the circulating system using air, which prevents removal of light fractions.
Although manual samplers used in collecting samples are simple and easy to use, they have a number of disadvantages and inconveniences, in particular:
- the person collecting samples must climb onto an open trailer containing cereal
- additional microbiological impurities may be left while walking on the cereal
- insertion of about 1.5 m long sampler into the grain requires not only skill, but strength as well
- time-consuming operation
- possibility of dishonest sample taking and replacement of samples
-
defectiveness in the design of a double tube sampler ended with a sharp cone of appr. 75 mm to the first inlet hole prevents collection of samples from the vehicle bottom. A s
ample taken incorrectly does not represent the whole layer of cereal.

The sampler is comprised of two tubes located coaxially with a drive. The internal tube takes a sample from a grain column, „cut“ from cereal with an external pipe. When the bottom is reached, the internal pipe drive is started and the grains are collected from the bottom layer, usually the most impure and often consisting solely of sand. Quantity of the grains collected with one penetration depends on the thickness of the layer and amounts to app. 1 litre/1 m.
The hydraulically controlled manipulator consists of a column, a scissor extension arm and hydraulic drive, it allows the insertion of the sampler vertically into the grain mass down to the vehicle bottom to take primary samples according to an envelope system i.e. from different spots determined by using a CCTV equipped with an infrared camera. Such a system allows precise determination of the location of the sample collection and automatic start of the probe also at night.
The pneumatic transport system consists of fans, pneumatic tubes and a cyclone which separates the sample from the transporting air. A transparent container allows checking of the quantity of the sample collected. Moreover, it is possible to set automatic pouring of the sample of a specified quantity into a grain distributor, where the grains are divided into two equal parts. The verified range of the pneumatic transport system is up to 30 m, and the theoretical range value is 50 m.
The closed circuit television (CCTV) consists of a camera or a set of cameras (as requested), power supply cables and a monitor. Personnel can precisely aim the sampler over the spot where the sample is to be collected. The sampler can be equipped with a ‘semaphore’ signal used to control vehicle traffic which operation personnel may also control vehicle movement with.
The control and drive unit includes control cabinet, control desk and cabling. The control cabinet supplies particular devices with appropriate current and is used to control individual units by the service staff. Owing to the sophisticated design of the manipulator, it is only necessary to select the location where the sample is to be collected using the control desk and pressing the „Start” button.
